Scam Alert: Callers Posing as Marion Sheriff’s Deputies

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Ocala Police Department are warning of a phone scam where scammers pose as deputies. They call residents in the area, asking them to call back on a non-official number, and may request personal information or payments.
There is absolutely no deputy, or officer that will call you demanding you make payment over the phone or the internet. Some have been told they had missed jury duty or had a car impounded 10 years before and had unpaid fees. While impersonating an officer is a third-degree felony, a person who falsely impersonates an officer during the commission of a crime (such as defrauding someone of their money) commits a felony of the second degree.
MCSO advises hanging up if such a call is received and verifying legitimacy by calling the non-emergency line at 352-732-9111.

End of Watch

Deputy K-9 Leo fearlessly charged toward someone who was threatening several MSCO deputies with a gun. Unfortunately, during the confrontation, the suspect was able to shoot Leo before the deputies returned fire, killing the suspect. Leo gave his best at that moment to protect those deputies and especially his handler.

As you can imagine, it’s been a difficult time for all of the deputies at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office... Leo received the highest level of treatment from the UF Veterinarians. Their staff treated Leo as he was transported from Ocala to Gainesville. Sheriff Woods thanked Marion County Fire Rescue for transporting Leo, as well as the Ocala Police Department, the Florida Highway Patrol, and the Gainesville Police for helping clear traffic on Saturday as Leo was rushed to Gainesville. Despite getting the absolute best care, on Tuesday Leo succumbed to his injuries and we lost a faithful servant of Marion County. He belongs to this community. He was purchased with donations made by our citizens. Please keep the Marion County Sheriff’s K-9 units in your thoughts as they are feeling this the most this week. The relationship between the handlers and their k-9 partners is strong and to lose one so violently is going to be felt deeply for quite a while.

Year-Round School In Marion County

Should children go to school year-round? What are your thoughts? In a bygone era of helping on the farm children were needed at home during the summer months in most of the United States so the school schedule reflected that attendance by letting out for the summer months.

Today, summer often means extended vacations. This shift has left parents struggling to find affordable summer programs for their young children, leading to added stress. Not to mention that children often struggle to retain information learned months prior.

To address this, Florida initiated a five-year pilot program testing year-round schooling. Wyomina Park Elementary may be one of the schools where students attend 180 days but have their 12 weeks of vacation spread throughout the year.

What are your thoughts? Should children have multiple shorter vacations more often or months off in the summertime? Let us know on our FB page at Classic Hits Ocala.

Vacation Rental Regulations Pass At The Florida Senate

Florida lawmakers recently made strides in regulating short-term vacation rental platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo, but concerns linger among local officials regarding unresolved conflicts within their communities.

The Florida Senate passed a measure (SB 280) addressing occupancy limits for statewide vacation rental regulations. The bill stipulates a maximum overnight occupancy of two persons per bedroom, with additional allowances for common areas. It also grants property owners up to 15 days to address any issues.

While some, like South Florida Democratic Sen. Jason Pizzo, argue for shorter resolution times, proponents view the legislation as a balanced approach to safeguarding owner rights.

Opponents, like Broward County Democratic Sen. Tiny Polsky, advocate for local government control, emphasizing the need to balance property rights with community peace.

We have seen the difficulties with this when the City of Dunnellon began a campaign to control and limit vacation rentals. It has been an ongoing heated debate at City Hall for a few years. It has continued through two mayors, city attorneys fees and costs in the tens of thousands with still no end in sight. Leaving many to wonder why efforts and resources are being put to that as opposed to the crumbling police station and updated equipment for Dunnellon officers.

On the State level, despite partisan divisions, the bill's counterpart in the Florida House (HB 1537) presents its own nuances, including differing registration fees and response times to complaints.

Amidst the debate, Melbourne Beach Mayor Alison Dennington highlights the significance of local voices in Tallahassee and underscores the potential need for a grassroots constitutional amendment should the Legislature not address community concerns adequately.

The ongoing legislative saga reflects a broader struggle to find an equilibrium between homeowner rights and community well-being, echoing past debates on short-term rental regulations.

MCAS At Critical Capacity

Lily Tomlin's wise words, "Somebody should do something. Then I realized I AM somebody," strike a chord with the compassionate souls who work tirelessly at animal shelters. They embrace this motto not just as a job but as a way of life. Yet, they know they can't do it all alone. As 53 new dogs just arrived from a cruelty case, the shelter finds itself in a pressing situation, having already been stretched beyond capacity for months.

So, here's where you come in. The shelter is reaching out to the community, inviting you to be the change you wish to see in the world. Whether you've been contemplating adoption or feel a tug at your heartstrings to foster, your support is invaluable. Fostering provides these pups with a temporary home away from the shelter hustle and bustle, offering them a taste of love and comfort. And don't worry if you have furry friends at home already—crate training can make integration a breeze. Just share a bit about your routine and living situation, and the shelter team will provide all the tips and assistance you need.

Rescues and other shelters are also welcome to lend a helping paw by considering some of the shelter's lovable residents.

So, let's take that leap together and show up for these deserving animals.

Feel free to drop by for a visit any time between Tuesday and Saturday, from 10 am to 4:30 pm, at 5701 SE 66th Street in Ocala. For more details, hop online to marionfl.org/animal. Oh, and mark your calendar—on Thursday, February 1, the shelter is extending its hours until 6 pm for adoptions and new foster matches, with adoption fees joyfully waived.

Be Careful of Using Night Drop Boxes

Ocala Police are looking for two men who attempted to rob night drop boxes near the Paddock Mall. Both men were seen on video at one of the businesses attempting to use a homemade weighted device that had duct tape attached to it, to steal the contents from inside the night drop.

At this time it is unknown how many businesses were targeted. But please be aware that it is unsafe to leave cash or other valuables in a night drop box.

The video of these two individuals is making the rounds on social media and thankfully one of the men was shown in the video not wearing gloves while grasping the box lid. Also, while fishing for stolen items, their device became stuck in one of the night drops and that has now been turned over to the police for further evidence and possible fingerprints. If you have any information please contact Officer Rossi of Ocala Police Dept.

19 yo That Intentionally Ran Over Sunny Isles Police Officer Faces Felony

The 19-year-old son of an Israeli diplomat is going to be facing a felony assault charge after all.

On Saturday afternoon Avraham Gil was dangerously weaving in between cars because quote: “He doesn’t like to wait.” When an officer performing a traffic stop waved him down and yelled for him to “Stop!” Gil instead accelerated toward the officer and intentionally ran him over.

The officer was hurt in his leg and incapacitated. Gil was arrested and charged with assault and resisting arrest. Police say the motorcycle did not even have a license plate and Gil did not have a valid license. It should be a pretty simple case of a bad guy going to jail for poor choices. But no, Gil was later released without paying a penny by claiming diplomatic immunity through his father. There is even a video of him claiming diplomatic immunity to the arresting officer and offering to call his dad for them.
I can't even imagine how upsetting this would all be to the officer hurt or the entire dept.

The Sunny Isles Florida Police dept received great news from the State, however. According to the Department of State, consuls such as Gil's father, Eli Gil, are not shielded from criminal prosecution in a host country, nor are their family members. The "consular immunity" carried by Eli Gil carries far fewer protections than the immunity provided to full-fledged diplomatic agents.

So one less unlicensed aggressive driver may soon be on our Florida roadways thanks to the State Attorney’s office.

Barefoot Woman Stole MCSO Vehicle Then Causes Multiple Fatality Crash

An MCSO deputy joined other deputies already at the scene of a ‘suspicious incident call’ on February 1. The deputy was approached by a woman, rolled down his passenger side window, and told her to meet him behind the SUV. In an instant, he realized she'd crawled through the passenger side window and into the driver's seat and floored it! The deputy was able to reopen the driver’s door and attempted to pull her from the car. Thankfully the deputy was not injured when the car raced away with the door still open and the deputy’s hands inside the car! The other deputy on the scene immediately gave chase trying to stop the car which posed a serious risk to the public. Unfortunately, they were unable to prevent the fatal car crash that occurred. The driver was identified as 33-year-old Kendra Boone, a frequent flier to local jails in multiple counties throughout Central Florida. Most recently released from Orange County Correctional.
Mere minutes after stealing the patrol car she lost control on East State Road 40 — hitting a pickup head-on, killing a man and woman from South Carolina, and sending a third person to the hospital.

The sheriff says any blame for the tragic deaths falls on the woman who took off in the deputy's SUV.

"This individual decided to do what she did, and ended up killing two innocent individuals," Woods said.

Sheriff Woods seemed infuriated at any reference to agency policies about patrol vehicles being properly secured or the deputy being in any way at fault.

"This moron stole a police vehicle and killed two human beings." Woods said. He also asked that people hold those who did wrong accountable, not try to find blame where none is warranted.

The bodycam footage has been released and you can watch it on the MCSO Facebook page.

Be Careful of Using Night Drop Boxes

Ocala Police are looking for two men who attempted to rob night drop boxes near the Paddock Mall around 2 am last night.

If you have any information please contact Officer Rossi of the Ocala Police Dept.

MCSO Inspector John Lightle was awarded a Medal of Commendation

This was for his efforts to change the life of a young lady who was a victim of human trafficking. MCSO is proud to have individuals like Inspector Lightle who are dedicated to changing lives, fighting the plague of human trafficking, and representing MCSO in such an honorable way!

Gabrielle's Story:

In March 2018, deputies and detectives responded to a local hotel for a gunshot wound. Inspector John Lightle took over the investigation and learned that the female victim had been shot by her boyfriend in what was described to detectives as accidental. The victim’s boyfriend was arrested for various narcotics and gun charges related to the shooting. Inspector Lightle did not stop there, however.

Over the next two and a half months, he wrote numerous search warrants, more than a dozen subpoenas, and interviewed more than a dozen citizens. He learned the shooting was not an accident, but a progression in a shockingly brutal history of domestic violence and human trafficking against the victim.

Inspector Lightle began working with the victim and the Bradenton-based organization, Selah Freedom, where she began her restoration journey. In the 5 years since the incident, the victim received her GED, achieved a college degree, bought a home, married, is raising her children, and is now a full-time staff member at Selah Freedom.

This remarkable outcome was made possible by Inspector Lightle’s thoroughness, conscientiousness, determination, and initiative while carrying out the duties of his position. This success requires effort and diligence beyond that which is normally required of his position. Moreover, through Gabrielle's determination and commitment to overcome her circumstances, she has forged a bright, new future for herself and her family.
