Emergency crews responded to a gas leak near Brook Road and Emerald Road in Silver Springs Shores on Thursday. Responders contained the leak, according to local reporting.

Marion County Continues Reviewing Data-Center Regulations

Marion County commissioners are considering permanent regulations for large data centers following a public workshop on September 21.

Commissioners heard from a representative of Loudoun County, Virginia, an area with extensive data-center development. Discussions addressed electricity and water demand, employment and the effects of large facilities on surrounding communities.

The board also discussed whether the county's existing 12-month moratorium should apply to facilities requiring 20 megawatts or more rather than the current 50-megawatt threshold. Commissioners took no vote on changing the moratorium during the workshop.

Ocala Police Investigate Allegations Against Former Church Volunteer

Ocala Police have charged 27-year-old Caleb Ray with lewd and lascivious battery and unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

Investigators allege Ray maintained contact with a child he met through a local church and that the relationship later involved sexual abuse.

Police believe there may be additional victims and are encouraging families with relevant information to contact investigators.

Ray has been released on bond and is scheduled to return to court October 20. The allegations have not been adjudicated.

World Equestrian Center Fall Series Continues

The World Equestrian Center's 2026 Ocala Fall Series continues through Sunday, September 27, with regional hunter and Level 2 jumper competitions.

The three-week series resumes September 30 with two additional weeks of hunter and Level 3 jumper events, concluding October 11.

Marion County Holds Final $1.73 Billion Budget Hearing Tonight

Marion County commissioners will hold their second and final public hearing tonight on the proposed fiscal year 2026–27 budget.

The $1.732 billion spending plan includes approximately $1.17 billion in countywide operating funds and $562 million in other funds. About $253 million is allocated to infrastructure projects funded by the county's sales surtax, primarily road improvements.

Commissioners tentatively approved a combined countywide property-tax rate of 4.28 mills, up from 4.02 mills. The proposed increase would help fund additional emergency medical services, jail operations and other county services.

The hearing begins at 6 p.m. at the McPherson Governmental Campus, 601 Southeast 25th Avenue in Ocala.

Major Development Proposed Near Ocala's Future Buc-ee's

A developer has proposed a 105-acre mixed-use project near the future Buc-ee's location and the planned Interstate 75 interchange at Northwest 49th Street.

The proposed NW 49th Street Gateway development includes up to 535 single-family homes and apartments, a 500-room hotel, 450,000 square feet of retail space, medical and professional offices, restaurants and a convenience store.

The project is still in the planning stages. It requires rezoning and additional county approvals, including a detailed plan addressing preservation of large oak trees on the property.

Marion County Public Schools Superintendent Danielle Brewer will host a community town hall tonight at North Marion High School.

The meeting provides parents, students, employees and residents an opportunity to discuss school funding, district priorities, areas needing improvement and potential solutions.

Free Diabetes Education Classes Begin in Ocala

The Florida Department of Health in Marion County is partnering with the Marion County Hospital District to offer free weekly diabetes education classes.

The Diabetes Empowerment and Education Program begins today and continues through November 12. Classes cover blood-sugar monitoring, nutrition, meal planning, physical activity and preventing complications.

Sessions run Thursdays from 10 a.m. until noon at the Mary Sue Rich Community Center, 1821 Northwest 21st Street in Ocala.

Tourism Council Considers World Equestrian Center Grant Requests

The Marion County Tourist Development Council is scheduled to review tourism grant requests today, including more than $110,000 sought by the World Equestrian Center for its 2027 Winter Series.

Organizers project that the winter competitions could generate approximately $23 million in economic activity for Marion County. The grant requests remain subject to the county's review and approval process.

School Board Approves Five-Year Facilities Plan

The Marion County School Board voted 4–0 Tuesday evening to approve its Future-Focused Operations Plan, including changes to Wyomina Park Elementary, Oakcrest Elementary, Bridgeway Academy and Fordham Early Learning Academy.

The plan calls for many Wyomina Park students to move to Oakcrest by August 2027, Bridgeway Academy to relocate to the Wyomina Park campus, and Fordham to expand to include grades three through five. The district projects approximately $150 million in avoided deferred-maintenance costs and $2 million in annual operating savings. Attendance-zone decisions will require additional action.

Deputies Search for Missing Summerfield Woman

The Marion County Sheriff's Office is seeking information about 29-year-old Amber Elouise Wiggins, who has been missing since Friday, September 18.

Wiggins was last seen walking toward Happy Dave's gas station on U.S. Highway 441 in Summerfield. She is approximately five feet four inches tall, weighs 130 pounds and has green eyes and blonde or blonde-and-brown hair. She was last seen wearing a yellow shirt and gray leggings.

Pedestrian Killed in Ocklawaha Crash

A 32-year-old Ocklawaha man died Tuesday morning after being struck by a pickup truck on State Road 25 near Southeast 102nd Terrace.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports the crash occurred around 6:35 a.m. The pedestrian was walking in the westbound lane when a pickup driven by a 43-year-old Ocklawaha man struck him. The driver was not injured.

Ocala Considers New Downtown Business Grants

Ocala is considering a $500,000 grant program intended to attract and retain downtown retail businesses and restaurants.

The proposed program would replace the existing $50,000 downtown commercial grant with awards of up to $150,000 for individual businesses. The Community Redevelopment Agency Board must formally adopt the proposal before businesses can apply.

Woman Arrested in Fatal Reddick Stabbing

The Marion County Sheriff's Office has made an arrest in connection with Saturday's fatal stabbing near Reddick.

39-year-old Amy Georgina Marie Hogg is facing charges of second-degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

According to an arrest report, Hogg had been invited to stay with longtime friends at their residence on West Highway 318.

Investigators say an argument developed Friday night and continued into early Saturday morning.

A 39-year-old man was stabbed multiple times and died despite lifesaving efforts by deputies and paramedics.

A woman at the residence was also stabbed in the forearm while investigators say she struggled with Hogg over the knife.

Hogg was initially taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. After being medically cleared Monday, she was transported to the Marion County Jail.

Rabies Advisory Issued in Western Marion County

The Florida Department of Health in Marion County has issued a rabies advisory following a confirmed case involving a bobcat.

The bobcat was killed September 15 near State Road 40 and Southwest 140th Avenue in the Rainbow Park area.

Testing later confirmed that the animal was infected with rabies.

Health officials say residents and visitors should assume rabies could be present among wild animals in the area.

People should avoid physical contact with raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, coyotes and other wildlife.

Pet owners are also being reminded to keep rabies vaccinations current and supervise animals outdoors.

Anyone bitten or scratched by a wild or domestic animal should seek medical attention and report the incident to the Florida Department of Health in Marion County.

School Board Revisits Wyomina Park Elementary Plan Tonight

The Marion County School Board is scheduled to revisit one of the district's more closely watched school-planning issues tonight.

Board members will consider placing Wyomina Park Elementary, Fordham Early Learning Academy and Bridgeway Academy back into the district's five-year Future-Focused Operations Plan.

The three schools were removed from the plan during an August 11 meeting after parents and teachers raised concerns about the process.

District officials subsequently met with Wyomina Park employees and held two community meetings on August 27.

The superintendent is now recommending that all three schools be returned to the plan.

District staff says approval tonight would allow rezoning discussions to move forward but would not itself reassign students.

$606,600 Grant Could Bring Fresh Produce to 19 Elementary Schools

Marion County Public Schools could receive more than $606,000 to provide free fresh fruits and vegetables to elementary-school students.

School Board members are scheduled to consider accepting a $606,600 Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program grant from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services during tonight's meeting.

The funding would serve students at 19 Marion County elementary schools.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office is investigating a weekend stabbing that left one person dead in Reddick.

Deputies responded early Saturday morning to a home along West Highway 318.

Investigators say a man was found dead at the scene.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit is investigating the incident as a homicide.

Authorities had not released extensive details about the circumstances surrounding the stabbing as of early Monday morning.

Data Centers Back Before Marion County Commissioners Today

Marion County commissioners will continue their discussion over the future of large data centers during a public workshop at 2 p.m. today at the McPherson Governmental Campus.

The meeting comes after commissioners voted 4-to-1 last week to approve a 12-month moratorium on new applications for large commercial data centers requiring 50 megawatts or more of power.

The Florida Board of Education approved guidelines requiring school districts to amend their internet-safety policies to address artificial intelligence.

State colleges will also be required to establish limitations governing the use of AI in educational settings.

The statewide requirements will apply to school districts including Marion County Public Schools as educators continue determining how artificial-intelligence tools should be used in classrooms and student work.

Two Arrested in Shooting of Ocala Mother and 5-Year-Old

Ocala Police have arrested two men in connection with Monday night's shooting that wounded a mother and her five-year-old child.

Police say the family was traveling near Southeast 11th Avenue and Southeast 12th Street at approximately 9:45 p.m. when someone in a vehicle behind them opened fire.

Investigators say neighborhood security-camera audio captured more than 30 gunshots.

The mother was shot in the hand, while the five-year-old suffered serious injuries to the torso. Both were hospitalized in stable condition. The child's father was not injured.

Police used surveillance footage and license-plate reader information to identify a silver Chevrolet Impala allegedly connected with the shooting.

Twenty-eight-year-old Kentrai Re'shone Patterson was identified by investigators as the suspected shooter. He is charged with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle.

Twenty-six-year-old Kedonte Tyron Davis is charged as an accessory.

Both men were booked into the Marion County Jail.

Police say the investigation remains active as detectives work to identify a third person believed to have been inside the Impala.

Marion County Population Tops 447,000

Marion County's rapid population growth continues, with new estimates putting the county at more than 447,000 residents.

Preliminary April 1 estimates from the University of Florida's Bureau of Economic and Business Research put Marion County's population at approximately 447,170, including inmates.

That's an increase of more than 71,000 people since the 2020 Census, when the county recorded 375,908 residents.

Unincorporated Marion County alone is estimated to have more than 365,000 residents.

County leaders say the rapid growth continues to put pressure on roads, infrastructure and government services.

Ocala Home Sales Increase More Than 6 Percent

New housing numbers show continued activity in the Ocala-Marion County real-estate market.

Florida Realtors reported that closed sales in the Ocala market increased more than six percent in August 2026 compared with August 2025.

The average sales price increased about one percent.

The area's median home price was $289,000.

The latest numbers provide another indication of the continued demand for housing as Marion County's population grows.

Marion County Planning New Emergency Operations Center

Marion County is moving forward with plans to develop a new Emergency Operations Center to support the county's growing population and expanding emergency-management needs.

The facility would serve as a central coordination point during hurricanes, severe weather, wildfires and other large-scale emergencies.

County officials say the current emergency operations facility has limited space for the numerous agencies and organizations that work together during major incidents.

A larger facility would provide additional room for Marion County Emergency Management, public-safety agencies, utilities and other local and state partners.

Planning and development of the project will continue as Marion County determines the facility's final design, cost and construction schedule.

Georgia Woman Extradited in $44,850 Fraud Case

A Georgia woman has been extradited to Marion County after investigators accused her of using online vehicle advertisements to defraud buyers in several states.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office says 31-year-old Dakota Burchfield was extradited Wednesday and arrested on multiple fraud-related charges.

Investigators say the case began after a business owner wired $17,000 for a dump truck advertised online but never received the vehicle.

Detectives subsequently identified three additional alleged victims in Florida, Tennessee and Wyoming.

Authorities say the four victims lost a combined $44,850.

Burchfield was booked into the Marion County Jail on a reported $95,000 bond.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day Observed in Ocala

Marion County Veterans Services will mark National POW/MIA Recognition Day today with a special program at the Ocala-Marion County Veterans Memorial Park.

The program, called “Voices of Captivity: The Poetry of Prisoners of War,” will feature readings of poetry written by American prisoners of war.

The observance honors former prisoners of war and remembers American service members who remain missing in action.

Firefighters Battle Fire at Ocala Manufacturing Business

Ocala Fire Rescue crews responded Wednesday evening to a structure fire at Arnold Truss Manufacturing.

Officials say firefighters arrived at approximately 5:30 p.m. and found a shed on the property engulfed in flames.

Crews encountered a bolted gate and had to cut through a chain to gain access to the property. Firefighters were able to begin putting water on the fire within minutes.

The fire was brought under control before 6 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

Give4Marion Raises More Than $2.3 Million

The seventh annual Give4Marion campaign ended Wednesday night with another multimillion-dollar fundraising total for Marion County nonprofit organizations.

The Community Foundation for Ocala/Marion County reported $2,343,153 raised by 4,618 donors, who made 7,463 individual gifts during the 33-hour campaign.

The event officially ended at 7 p.m. Wednesday with a celebration at the Reilly Arts Center.

Give4Marion has raised more than $8.5 million during its previous six years, meaning this year's campaign pushes the cumulative amount raised well beyond $10 million.

Donations can still be made even though the official 2026 campaign has ended.

Impact Fees Halt Planned Ocala Youth Sports Facility

A planned indoor baseball and softball training facility in Ocala will not open after its owners were faced with more than $100,000 in Marion County transportation impact fees.

Brick City Academy had planned to convert approximately 12,500 square feet of a former Marion County Public Schools warehouse on Southeast Third Avenue into indoor batting cages, a pitching area and youth training facility.

According to the Ocala Gazette, county rules classify indoor batting cages in the racquet-club and health-spa land-use category.

After accounting for the building's previous warehouse use, the owners faced an impact fee of approximately $129,000 under that classification.

The owners announced September 10 that they could not afford the additional expense and would not move forward with opening the facility.

Ocala Renews Contracts for Four Top Officials

Four of Ocala's highest-ranking appointed officials have received new two-year contracts.

During Tuesday's meeting, the Ocala City Council approved new contracts for City Clerk Angel Jacobs, Police Chief Michael Balken, City Manager Peter Lee and City Attorney William Sexton.

Jacobs, Balken and Sexton received unanimous 5-to-0 support.

City Manager Pete Lee's contract was approved with Councilman Barry Hilty casting the lone dissenting vote.

Campaign Launched to Save Historic Bryant House

The Historic Ocala Preservation Society has launched a major fundraising campaign to restore the Bryant House on East Fort King Street.

Built around 1892, the house serves as the organization's headquarters and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The “Bring Back the Bryant” campaign has a goal of raising $300,000.

Planned work includes stabilizing the second floor, foundation repairs, restoration of the historic porch and windows, and exterior weather protection.

The organization says storms and moisture have caused significant damage to portions of the historic structure in recent years.

Police Say Deadly Ocala Shooting Was Connected to Attempted Drug Robbery

Ocala Police have released new information about Sunday's fatal shooting in northwest Ocala.

Police Chief Mike Balken says investigators believe the shooting was connected to an attempted drug robbery.

The shooting occurred Sunday afternoon in the 1100 block of Northwest 12th Avenue.

One person was killed and two others were hospitalized.

Police now say detectives have identified everyone involved in the incident and that the individuals knew one another.

The investigation remains active.

Mother and 5-Year-Old Child Shot in Ocala

Ocala Police are asking the public for help following another shooting that wounded a woman and her five-year-old child.

Investigators say a family of three was traveling near the 1200 block of Southeast 11th Avenue at about 9:45 Monday night when a vehicle behind them opened fire.

The family's vehicle was struck multiple times.

The mother and child were both hit by gunfire and transported to a hospital, where police say they are in stable condition.

Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and say it is not connected to Sunday's homicide.

Anyone with information or surveillance or doorbell-camera video from the area is being asked to contact Ocala Police.

Ocala Approves $1.27 Billion Budget

Ocala City Council has given final approval to the city's fiscal year 2026-27 budget.

The spending plan totals approximately $1.27 billion.

Council members approved an operating millage rate of 6.6177 mills, the same nominal rate currently in effect. Because property values have increased, the rate is about 3.84 percent above the rolled-back rate.

The council also approved an approximately $18.2 million fire assessment.

The new fiscal year begins October 1.

Give4Marion Wraps Up Tonight

Marion County's annual Give4Marion fundraising campaign enters its final day today.

The seventh annual event began Tuesday morning and runs for a total of 33 hours.

Since Give4Marion began, organizers say the campaign has generated more than $8.5 million for nonprofit organizations serving Marion County.

The campaign concludes tonight with a celebration at the Reilly Arts Center from 5 until 7 p.m., where participants can watch the final donations come in and learn more about participating nonprofits.

Concerns Raised About Marion County Horse Facility

Several residents raised concerns Tuesday before the Marion County Commission about conditions at a local horse embryo-transfer facility.

Speakers questioned the cleanliness of areas where horses are kept and raised concerns about animal welfare and possible disease.

Embryo Transfer Specialists said it is addressing conditions caused by recent heavy rain and takes concerns about the care of its horses seriously.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office told WCJB that it had found nothing illegal about the situation.

Marion County Approves New Smoke, Vape and Kratom Shop Restrictions

New zoning restrictions are now in place for standalone smoke, vape and kratom businesses in unincorporated Marion County.

County commissioners unanimously approved rules Monday requiring new shops to remain at least 1,500 feet from schools, licensed daycare centers, churches, places of worship and public parks.

New shops also must remain at least 2,500 feet from another smoke shop.

Ocala Police Investigating Fatal Weekend Shooting

Ocala Police continue investigating a shooting that left one person dead and others injured Sunday afternoon.

Officers responded at approximately 2:08 p.m. to the 1100 block of Northwest 12th Avenue in northwest Ocala.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while at least one other person was transported to a hospital.

Police also recovered a rifle in a grassy area near the shooting location.

Investigators are examining whether a crash that occurred shortly afterward near Southwest Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and State Road 200 was connected to the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Commissioners Consider 12-Month Data Center Moratorium Today

The grand jury found significant problems involving the Florida Department of Children and Families and the way cases involving vulnerable residents are handled locally.

Among the issues cited were limited availability of adult protective investigators after normal business hours, cases allegedly being closed prematurely and concerns involving mental-capacity evaluations.

The grand jury reviewed several cases dating back to 2016 and issued 34 recommendations, including a call for greater parity between services available to vulnerable children and vulnerable adults.

County Also Considers Fire, Solid Waste and Stormwater Assessments

Marion County commissioners have another significant public hearing scheduled for 10 a.m. today.

The board will consider annual rate resolutions and certify non-ad valorem assessment rolls covering Fire Rescue, Solid Waste and Stormwater services.

Marion County commissioners hold a final public hearing tonight on proposed regulations governing new smoke, vape and kratom shops.

Under the proposed ordinance, a new business primarily selling tobacco products, e-cigarettes, kratom or related products could not open within 1,500 feet of a school, licensed daycare, church, place of worship or public park.

New shops would also have to remain at least 2,500 feet from another smoke shop.

Existing businesses would be allowed to remain as pre-existing nonconforming uses. Grocery and convenience stores that sell the products as a secondary part of their business would be exempt.

The second and final public hearing begins at 5:30 p.m. today at the McPherson Governmental Campus Auditorium.

Ocala Mayor Ben Marciano has also asked city officials to examine whether similar restrictions should be considered within the city limits.

New Downtown Ocala Parking Garage Opens

Downtown Ocala has a significant new parking option.

Public Parking Garage Number Two is now open between Broadway and Fort King Street.

The facility opened last week after a lengthy construction process and is designed to provide additional parking for downtown employees, visitors, shoppers, diners and people attending events.

The opening comes as Ocala continues investing in downtown transportation and parking infrastructure.

Six Marion County Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

Six Marion County high school seniors have earned recognition as 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists.

The students are among approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide.

Semifinalists now have an opportunity to advance to finalist status and compete for National Merit Scholarships that will be awarded next spring.

The recognition places the Marion County students among some of the country's highest-performing high school seniors.

Give4Marion Begins Tuesday

One of Marion County's largest annual nonprofit fundraising campaigns begins tomorrow.

Give4Marion starts Tuesday, September 15, and runs for 33 hours through Wednesday evening.

The campaign allows residents to make online donations directly to participating Marion County nonprofit organizations and includes special matching opportunities and incentives throughout the event.

Give4Marion was launched by the Community Foundation for Ocala/Marion County and has become an annual community-wide fundraising effort.

New Marion County Commissioner Set to Take District 2 Seat

Mike Crimi is set to become Marion County's next District 2 commissioner following the withdrawal of write-in candidate Mark Okus.

Crimi won the Republican primary on August 18.

With no Democratic candidate on the November ballot and the write-in candidate now withdrawn, Crimi is effectively unopposed for the seat currently held by longtime Commissioner Kathy Bryant.

Crimi received 19,231 votes in the August primary.

Marion County Marks 25th Anniversary of September 11

Marion County residents will gather this morning to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The Marion County Board of County Commissioners is hosting a remembrance ceremony beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Ocala-Marion County Veterans Memorial Park, 2601 East Fort King Street.

The ceremony will remember those killed in the attacks and recognize the first responders, members of the military and others whose lives were forever changed by September 11.

The City of Belleview will hold its own 2026 Freedom Walk at 6 p.m. at the Belleview Community Center, followed by the traditional walk through Lake Lillian Park.

Ocala Police Losing Some License-Plate Reader Cameras

Changes are coming to the automated license-plate reader network used by law-enforcement agencies in Ocala and Marion County.

According to the Ocala Gazette, a new Florida Department of Transportation directive involving cameras located along state roads will eliminate 10 of the Ocala Police Department's 68 license-plate readers.

An unspecified number of readers operated by the Marion County Sheriff's Office will also be affected.

The cameras automatically scan license plates and can alert law enforcement when a vehicle is associated with an investigation or other police interest.

Local agencies say they will comply with the state's directive.

Search Begins for New Marion Transit Operator

Marion County has formally begun the process of finding a new organization to operate transportation services for seniors, people with disabilities and other transportation-disadvantaged residents.

The county published a request for proposals Thursday for a Community Transportation Coordinator for the Ocala/Marion County Transportation Planning Organization.

The move follows Marion Senior Services' announcement that it intends to leave the transportation business by December.

The organization has operated Marion Transit for decades but says rapidly increasing liability-insurance costs have made continuing the service financially difficult.

Finding a replacement operator will be important to maintaining transportation services used by thousands of Marion County residents.

Mills and Smith Head to November School Board Runoff

Marion County voters will return to the polls November 3 to decide the open District 4 School Board seat.

Mike Mills and Brigitte Smith advanced from the August 18 primary.

Mills received 36.86 percent of the vote, while Smith received 30.84 percent. Because neither candidate received a majority, the two will meet in a runoff.

The nonpartisan District 4 contest is decided by voters throughout Marion County.

The candidates have identified reading performance, student discipline, school safety, transportation, district finances and continued enrollment growth among the major issues facing the school system.

Incumbent Nancy Thrower is not seeking another term.

Dunnellon Honors Commissioner Kathy Bryant

Dunnellon city leaders have honored outgoing Marion County Commissioner Kathy Bryant as she prepares to leave office after 16 years representing District 2.

City officials recognized Bryant during Wednesday's Dunnellon City Council meeting.

Bryant was first elected to the Marion County Commission in 2010 and has served four terms.

Her district includes Dunnellon and portions of southwest Marion County.

Former Ocala Police Chief Sam Williams Remembered

Family, friends and members of the law-enforcement community will remember former Ocala Police Chief Samuel "Sam" Williams this weekend.

Williams died August 28 at the age of 79.

He served as Ocala Police Chief from 2003 until 2011 and was the second African American to lead the department.

A viewing is scheduled today, followed by a celebration of life Saturday.

Williams is remembered for modernizing the department, securing grant funding and helping establish the Phoenix Rising youth program.

Driver Arrested Following Fatal Hit-and-Run on County Road 200A

A Marion County man has been arrested following a fatal hit-and-run crash Wednesday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol says a 29-year-old Ocala man was walking along the east shoulder of County Road 200A near Northeast 110th Street at approximately 8:05 a.m.

Troopers say a northbound Ford Explorer left the roadway and struck the pedestrian. The driver allegedly failed to stop and left the area.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Approximately one hour later, investigators say the driver returned in the damaged vehicle and admitted that he had been behind the wheel.

Troopers identified the driver as 29-year-old Matthew Aaron Boardman of Anthony. He was arrested on a felony charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death and was being held without bond.

Marion County Holds First Budget Hearing Tonight

Marion County residents have an opportunity tonight to comment on the county's proposed budget and property-tax rates for the upcoming fiscal year.

The first public hearing on the countywide fiscal year 2026-27 budget begins at 6 p.m. at the McPherson Governmental Campus auditorium, 601 Southeast 25th Avenue in Ocala.

Commissioners will consider adoption of the tentative county budget and proposed millage rates.

A separate Rainbow Lakes Estates budget hearing is scheduled immediately beforehand at 5:50 p.m.

Blue Angels Confirmed for Wings Over Ocala

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels have officially been confirmed as headliners for Wings Over Ocala Florida.

The air show is scheduled for April 30 through May 2, 2027 at Ocala International Airport.

Organizers say the show will also include a four-ship F-15 Eagle demonstration, a parachute jump team, the Smoke-n-Thunder Jet Car, Redline Airshows, the Outlaw Jet Team and vintage aircraft and warbird demonstrations.

Deputy-Involved Shooting Under Investigation in Dunnellon

State and local authorities are investigating a deputy-involved shooting in western Marion County.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office reported Tuesday night that the shooting involved a Levy County Sheriff's deputy in the 23,200 block of West Highway 40 in Dunnellon.

The roadway was closed following the incident.

Levy County Sheriff's deputies and agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement were at the scene investigating.

Details surrounding what led to the shooting and information about possible injuries had not yet been released as of early Wednesday morning.

School Board Plans $160 Million in Borrowing for Construction

The Marion County School Board is moving forward with plans to borrow as much as $160 million to accelerate school construction and renovation projects.

At the same time, board members have shelved a controversial proposal to build a new $35 million central administrative office.

Murphy was an organ donor, and first responders gathered for an honor walk at an Ocala hospital last week.

Ocala Wants Public Input on SunTran

The City of Ocala is asking residents to help determine the future of the area's SunTran public transportation system.

An online rider survey is open through Friday, September 11, and city officials want responses from both regular SunTran passengers and people who currently don't use the service.

The survey asks residents about existing routes, where they would like service expanded and whether improvements such as more frequent buses, shorter travel times or better bus-stop amenities would make them more likely to use public transportation.

Ocala Police Launch Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Operation

Ocala Police have launched a new traffic-enforcement operation aimed at improving safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Officers are focusing additional attention on South Pine Avenue, Silver Springs Boulevard, U.S. Highway 27 and Southwest College Road.

Police say those corridors experience the city's highest number of pedestrian and bicycle crashes.

Officers will be watching for speeding, drivers failing to yield pedestrian right-of-way, vehicles blocking sidewalks and other traffic violations.

Plans Developing for Marion County Thoroughbred Racetrack

A group of investors and horse-racing interests is pursuing plans for a major new thoroughbred racing facility in Marion County.

Gilligan Racing announced its intention to develop the facility in partnership with Ocala Thoroughbred Racing, which controls a unique thoroughbred racing permit specifically tied to Marion County.

Organizers say several possible sites are being considered, although no location has been publicly announced.

The project would still need to go through the appropriate county approval process. Organizers say they envision more than a traditional racetrack, with entertainment and other activities designed to make the facility a major economic attraction.

The proposal could become another significant addition to Marion County's equine industry and its "Horse Capital of the World" identity.

SW 80th Avenue Widening Project Moves Forward

Marion County is moving ahead with another phase of the major Southwest and Northwest 80th Avenue widening project.

County commissioners authorized staff Tuesday to complete remaining property acquisitions needed for Segment 1B of the project.

The overall project covers approximately 10.5 miles and will eventually widen the corridor to four lanes from Southwest 90th Street north across State Road 40 to about a half-mile north of U.S. Highway 27.

Plans also call for a median, intersection improvements, drainage facilities, a sidewalk and a shared-use path.

County officials say the expanded corridor is intended to accommodate west Marion County growth while providing an alternative to State Road 200 and Interstate 75.

Firefighters Rescue Driver Trapped Beneath Semi-Truck

Marion County firefighters successfully rescued a driver whose vehicle became trapped beneath a tractor-trailer in Citra.

Marion County Fire Rescue responded at approximately 4:25 Wednesday morning to the intersection of U.S. Highway 441 and U.S. Highway 301.

Crews arrived to find a red sedan wedged underneath the semi with one person trapped inside.

Firefighters began an extrication operation and freed the driver within minutes. Paramedics treated the patient before transporting the individual to a local hospital.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office and Florida Highway Patrol also responded to the scene.

Former Ocala Police Chief Sam Williams Dies at 79

Ocala is remembering former Police Chief Samuel "Sam" Williams, who died August 28 at age 79.

Williams became Ocala Police Chief in 2003 and served until 2011. He was the second African American to hold the position in the department's history.

During his tenure, Williams helped modernize OPD's technology, secured more than $1 million in grants and emphasized leadership development within the department.

Marion County's annual Give4Marion fundraising campaign returns later this month.

The Ocala Shrine Rodeo returns to the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion tonight and Saturday.

Marion County Takes Up Data Center Regulations Today

Marion County commissioners will spend part of today discussing how the county should handle future large-scale data center proposals.

The Board of County Commissioners holds its regular meeting beginning at 9 a.m., followed by a special workshop scheduled for 2 p.m. at the McPherson Governmental Campus.

County Growth Services staff says the goal is to establish direction for evaluating and managing potential data-center applications before an actual proposal is submitted.

The discussion will also consider new requirements contained in Florida Senate Bill 484 dealing with utility costs and water-use permitting.

Complaints include late-night noise, litter, verbal harassment and concerns about riders creating dangerous conditions on neighborhood streets.

Residents are seeking increased enforcement and other measures to discourage illegal riding on public roads and private property.
