Scam Alert: Callers Posing as Marion Sheriff’s Deputies

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Ocala Police Department are warning of a phone scam where scammers pose as deputies. They call residents in the area, asking them to call back on a non-official number, and may request personal information or payments.
There is absolutely no deputy, or officer that will call you demanding you make payment over the phone or the internet. Some have been told they had missed jury duty or had a car impounded 10 years before and had unpaid fees. While impersonating an officer is a third-degree felony, a person who falsely impersonates an officer during the commission of a crime (such as defrauding someone of their money) commits a felony of the second degree.
MCSO advises hanging up if such a call is received and verifying legitimacy by calling the non-emergency line at 352-732-9111.
