Ocala Christian Academy Teacher Arrested Following Allegations Involving Student

An Ocala Christian Academy teacher has been arrested following allegations that he took inappropriate photographs of a female student.

According to Ocala Police, 34-year-old Joel Gould, a fifth-grade teacher at the school, allegedly positioned his cellphone beneath a girl's skirt during recess.

Investigators say a witness observed the incident while the student was standing on a picnic table near the teacher.

The student also reported that Gould touched her leg several times.

Police say Gould admitted taking the photographs during questioning.

He was taken into custody and booked into the Marion County Jail.

Investigators are examining whether additional students may have been victimized.

The allegations remain part of an active criminal investigation. Gould is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Motorcyclist Killed in Crash Near Interstate 75 and County Road 484

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal motorcycle collision that occurred Monday evening in southern Marion County.

Troopers say a 33-year-old Orlando man was riding westbound on County Road 484 at approximately 7:30 p.m. on October 26.

According to the preliminary investigation, the motorcyclist attempted to turn left onto the southbound Interstate 75 entrance ramp.

The motorcycle entered the path of an eastbound SUV, resulting in a collision.

The rider was thrown from the motorcycle and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The crash highlights ongoing safety concerns at busy intersections near interstate entrances.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues investigating.

Animal Services Director's Resignation Raises Questions About Shelter Operations

Marion County Animal Services is facing renewed scrutiny following allegations of animal mistreatment and the recent departure of its director.

Animal advocate Jayne Nessif has raised concerns about conditions at the county-operated shelter.

Among the allegations is that a dog died of heatstroke after being left outdoors for approximately seven hours in temperatures exceeding 90 degrees without adequate water or shade.

Nessif has questioned whether the incident contributed to the departure of the agency's director.

County officials dispute that connection, saying the director's employment ended October 2 and that the departure was not tied to a particular incident.

Officials say county procedures require reviews of animal injuries and deaths, including interviews with staff when appropriate.

According to the county, its review did not result in an internal investigation.

Advocates have also questioned euthanasia procedures, kennel conditions and the accuracy of shelter records.

WCJB TV20 has requested additional county documents to independently examine the allegations.

Marion County opened its new animal shelter in May, but advocates say some of their concerns predate the new facility.

The allegations have not been independently established.

Proposed 108-Acre Development Near Heathbrook Moves Forward

A major commercial and mixed-use development proposed along Interstate 75 in southwest Ocala has cleared an initial procedural hurdle.

Ocala City Council unanimously approved a waiver allowing the developer to submit a new rezoning application without waiting a full year after a previous zoning decision.

The action was taken October 20 and reported in greater detail Tuesday.

The proposal involves approximately 108.74 acres west of Interstate 75, south of State Road 200 and near Southwest 66th Street.

The property was originally part of a larger, approximately 283-acre planned development.

The eastern portion was subsequently sold to Flyover Ocala LLC, which intends to develop the property under a separate concept known as The Exchange at Ocala.

The remaining western portion is moving forward as the Mockingbird Ridge residential community, with plans for 493 single-family homes.

City officials say the waiver allows the commercial developer to begin the formal rezoning process.

It does not constitute final approval of the new development.

Additional technical reviews and public hearings will be required before the project can proceed.

Downtown Ocala Intersection Closed Today for Utility Work

Motorists traveling through downtown Ocala should prepare for a temporary road closure today.

The intersection of Northeast Second Street and Northeast Eighth Avenue is scheduled to close from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday, October 28.

The closure will allow contractor Miller Pipeline LLC to replace water services.

Detours will direct motorists around the work area using Northeast Sanchez Avenue, Northeast Third Street and Northeast Tenth Avenue.

Additional traffic restrictions are also scheduled this week along Interstate 75 and State Road 200.

Interstate 75 construction includes overnight lane closures between State Road 44 and State Road 326.

Motorists should follow posted detour signs and allow extra travel time.

Public Meeting Tonight on Proposed Downtown Ocala Trail

The City of Ocala is holding a public meeting tonight to discuss the proposed Downtown Ocala Trail.

The project would create an approximately 6.2-mile recreational connection between downtown Ocala and Silver Springs State Park.

The proposed route would include paved pathways for pedestrians and bicyclists where feasible, along with connections using existing roads and sidewalks.

City officials are seeking feedback from residents, business owners and property owners as the design process continues.

The meeting is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, at the Marion County Growth Services Training Room, 2710 East Silver Springs Boulevard.

The public is encouraged to attend.
