Marion County Teachers Getting Raises Under New Contract
Marion County teachers will receive raises after the School Board unanimously approved a new contract Tuesday night.
The agreement for the current school year includes nearly $6 million in additional salary and benefits.
Members of the teachers union ratified the tentative agreement last week, and the new contract will be retroactive to July 1.
Board members said they were pleased negotiations were completed early in the new school year.
Two-Hour Early Dismissal Today
Parents should prepare for students to arrive home earlier than usual today.
Marion County Public Schools has scheduled a two-hour early dismissal for Wednesday, August 26.
The early release applies districtwide. Families should plan for afternoon bus transportation and student pickup times to occur approximately two hours earlier than on a normal school day.
County Holds Hearing on Roadside Vendor Regulations
The Marion County Board of County Commissioners will hold a special public hearing at 9 a.m. today at the McPherson Governmental Campus.
Commissioners will consider an ordinance changing portions of the county's Land Development Code dealing with roadside vendors.
The proposed ordinance would revise Article 4 of the county code, including special requirements governing roadside vendor operations in unincorporated Marion County.
Careers and Colleges Expo Takes Place Today
Marion County Public Schools and the College of Central Florida are presenting the 2026 Careers and Colleges Expo today.
The event is designed to introduce students to options available after high school, including universities and colleges, technical and specialized education, workforce opportunities and military service.
The expo provides students an opportunity to speak directly with representatives as they begin making decisions about education and careers after graduation.
County Online Services Scheduled for Maintenance
Marion County residents who use the county's online permitting and development services should be aware of scheduled maintenance tonight.
The county says those online services will undergo maintenance from 6 p.m. until midnight Wednesday.
Residents needing online development or permitting services may want to complete their business before the maintenance period begins.
