Tax Day is the day on which individual income tax returns are due to be submitted to the federal government. Since 1955, Tax Day has typically fallen on or just after April 15. What happens if you file taxes after April 15?

For every month that you file late, you'll have to pay an additional 5 percent “failure to file” penalty on the total amount you owe. It's also important to note that a month doesn't mean 30 days to the IRS. Nope, filing your return even one day late means you'll still be hit with the full 5 percent penalty.
