Phone Scam Going Around

Marion County Sheriff’s Office reported a phone scam in May involving scammers who pretended to be “Sergeant Chapman” or "Captain Joe Van Gorder" with MCSO, and they would call victims to advise that they missed jury duty. The fake “deputy” would then threaten to have the victim arrested if they failed to pay a fee to rectify the situation.

It seems the Ocala Police Dept is now receiving calls from victims claiming the same thing. One victim stated that the caller had a thick southern accent and gave the victim's old address as proof of where the "lost" jury summons had been sent. The victims were then directed to provide proof of payment over the phone but to go straight to the Sheriff's department to "turn themselves in" so that it could all get removed from their records. The fake deputy or officer was helpful enough to provide the address of Marion County Sheriff's dept main offices. I am now going to play a voicemail from this caller.

“This is a scam! Just hang up,” MCSO stated on its Facebook page. “If you call the number back, it may seem like a legitimate call. However, MCSO will never accept payment or proof of payment over the phone for any reason!”

To verify if you actually missed jury duty, contact the Marion County Clerk of Court.

Scammers will try to create a sense of panic and urgency to force individuals to take action, such as sending a payment. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is reminding citizens to “trust their gut” because “if something seems wrong or suspicious, it probably is.
