Loritos Pizza on E. Silver Springs Blvd Closed

The iconic candle-holding chianti wine bottle will be disappearing soon. The wine bottle sign is an iconic part of Ocala. It's a landmark. Loritos's has been Ocala's favorite authentic Italian restaurant for 53 YEARS and it has now closed its doors. Lorito’s Italian kitchen was opened in September of 1970. Many Lorito's customers tell their story’s of growing up going to Lorito’s with their grandparents or parents and now they are the grandparents and parents bringing their own kids. The kids that grew up in the area would sometimes skip school to head over and hang out at the pizza parlor and grab a slice, while Gaspard Lorito was watching out and sending them out the back door when an authority figure came around looking for truants. Gaspard immigrated to the U.S. from Italy as a teenager with his parents and two younger sisters. He went straight to work at an Italian bakery in New York and later at a pizzeria in Brooklyn. Eventually, he opened his own pizzeria in New York, but a visit to an uncle in Florida changed the course of his life.

His uncle talked him into opening a restaurant in Florida. From the start, the restaurant was a family affair. One of Gaspard's sisters, Marie Lorito Sapia, worked side-by-side with him for decades. When Gaspard passed away in January 2019, the restaurant came under new management, but that abruptly ended last week when after the weekend specials were posted, they closed the doors instead. According to some of their employees, the restaurant closed not because of the ownership, but because the cost of rent, the cost of food, and the cost of hiring new employees has exceeded the income.
